The Cornwall Sustainable Tourism Project

It is true to say that whilst we have always had a leaning to the greener side of life, our main inspiration for what we do now has come from our involvement with CoaST (The Cornwall Sustainable Tourism Project) who have provided inspiration and access to technical knowledge as well as offering huge amounts of support and encouragement.

Shortly after joining CoaST in 2004, we entered for the Cornwall Sustainability Awards which to our complete surprise we won the competition for the Best Small Business and were totally amazed to also be declared Overall Winner!

The following year, we were appointed CoaST Ambassadors and since then we felt confident to to share our knowledge, as well as promote understanding and practice of sustainability in tourism.

5 ways to be the best sort of visitor

small steps...big impacts

Wherever we go and whatever we do, we have an impact. Make positive choices, and you can help us care for Cornwall and make that impact a positive one.

Have a fantastic holiday! CoaST

1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

In Cornwall we recycle! You can help us by refusing packaging and bags you don’t need, and using the recycling banks you’ll see in most main car parks across the area. And if you can recycle where you’re staying - please do. Even better! Recycle for Cornwall

2. Get out of the car!

Walking, cycling and riding are great ways to see the area without adding to traffic. Use public transport if you need to travel to your start point, but try exploring near to where you are staying - there are some fantastic places to see right on your doorstep...just ask! SUSTRANS Cornwall

3. Stay Local, Eat Local, Buy Local, See Local

Buy local - and you’ll see what Cornwall can offer, and benefit the communities of Cornwall. Visit Farmers Markets, farm shops, village stores, pubs and cafes. Our distinctive culture shines through the hundreds of community events that happen throughout the year - and the food and drink is simply fantastic...Taste of the West

4. Chill Out, Switch Off!l

)You can see the stars at night in Cornwall! Help us reduce light pollution, energy use and CO2 emissions by switching off lights and all those standby buttons when you don’t need them. Help us reduce water consumption by using just the water you need; and then sit back and enjoy that view... Cornwall Energy Partnership

5. Follow the Countryside Code

The Countryside Code reminds us all to protect, respect and enjoy: look after plants and animals; take litter away; leave gates and property as you find them; keep dogs under close control; and consider other people and users when visiting the countryside. And enjoy! The Countryside Code

With its enthusiastic membership and inspirational leadership, CoaST is at the forefront of sustainable tourism in the UK.

Here are the slides from a presentation given on a CoaST project that gives a lot of the background to what we, and a lot of other like-minded people do. The presentation should be available in a PDF viewer below, but just in case you can download it here CoaST - The Ambassador Effect
