The Beacon

Monument and conservation area

The Bodmin Beacon to the south of the town, can be seen stretching high into the sky from most points in the town. The Beacon was erected in 1856 in memory of Sir Walter Raleigh Gilbert, a local town dignitory born in Priory House.

In 1994, the Beacon was declared a Local Nature Reserve and the development of a whole diverse range of wildlife is encouraged within the Reserve. 18,000 trees have been planted to develop a community woodland and several surrounding fields are managed as traditional hay meadows.
