Lanhydrock House and Gardens

Lanhydrock House and Gardens have been owned and run by the National Trust since 1953. It is the Trust’s largest property, with 50 rooms open to the public which include most of the Family’s rooms, as well as the servants’ quarters, kitchens and the many sculleries.

Home to the Robartes family since 1620 the house underwent many changes not least as a result of a disastrous fire in 1881 which destroyed much of the house with the exception of the Gate House and North Wing. The remainder was rebuilt in “state of the art” High Victorian style in keeping with the fashion of the day.

Refreshments are available served in the old stable block and the servants’ quarters with a good choice of menus.

Lanhydrock Gardens are extensive and lovingly tended. There are formal Victorian parterre gardens to the front of the house with the magnificent and exquisitely scented Magnolia Grandiflora (late summer flowering) covering much of one wall of the North Wing. The formal gardens lead into a higher wooded garden rising above the house and offering, from early spring onwards, a simply stunning display of rhododendrons, camellias and spring flowering magnolias as well as spring bulbs, wild flowers and many unusual trees and shrubs.

Surrounded by oak and beech woods and many ancient trees, the footpaths of the woods and parkland are all open to the public and form part of the Estate which in total comprises some 900 acres.

If you are passionate about historic houses you will love Lanhydrock which transports you back in time to the last Century and beyond.
