St Mawes Castle

Built under the instruction of Henry VIII to provide additional support to Pendennis Castle to protect the port and harbour of Falmouth and the Carrick Roads from invading Catholic forces after the Reformation.

The Castle itself is a trefoil shaped Gun Fort and is an architectural delight.

Planning a Day Out

St Mawes Castle is situated at the end of Roseland peninsular. The fort and castle are smaller than Pendennis and you can cover the castle and surrounding grounds in 2-3 hours. There are no refreshment facilities onsite, but the local village of St Mawes is within walking distance with several cafes and restaurants. The Castle is enclosed and suitable for a visit in all weathers, however the site is exposed and appropriate clothing will be needed when exploring the grounds and outer parts of the castle.

You may also like to visit the sister fort Pendennis Castle which is on the other side of the Carrick Roads. It's a bit of a round trip by road, but you can take a shortcut via the King Harry Ferry.
