St Juliot Church
Originally a Saxon church it became seriously dilapidated in the early 19th century due to lack of funds and was almost totally rebuilt in 1870 to designs by Thomas Hardy, who was then a practising architect.
It was here that Hardy met his future wife Emma Gifford, the sister-in-law of the Rector of St Juliot, who played an important part in convincing Hardy to give up architecture and to concentrate on his writing and poetry.
The church contains memorial tables to both Emma Gifford and Thomas Hardy, though Hardy is actually buried at Poets Corner in Westminster.
Further information can be found in an excellent booklet St Juliot Church and Thomas Hardy by Charles P. C. Pettit.
