Caerhays Castle

The Caerhays estate was originally owned by the Trevanion family from the 14th century to mid eighteen hundreds. The castle and landscaping that can be seen today were designed by John Nash in the mid eighteen hundreds, but unfortunately the costs bankrupted the family. The estate was purchased by Michael Williams of Scorrier in 1853 and has remained in the Williams family to this day.

Caerhays Gardens

The garden is home to the National Magnolia Collection and these are best seen mid-March to April. The gardens also contain 75 trees that are listed in the Tree Register - the definitive record of Britain and Ireland's champion trees - as being the largest specimens of their species and type.

Thanks to Robert and Hazel for providing some of the photos and especially for 'A Magnolia in the hand...'

Planning a Day Out

The castle is situated about 5 miles west of Mevagissey on the south coast. You can park in the beach car park at Porthluney Cove and walk up to the Castle. Please note that Caerhays Castle and Gardens have opening times limited to early Spring through to the start of Summer so it's as well to check times before visiting.

You can also take a walk westwards from Porthluney Cove along the South West Coast Path to Portholland.
