Polgwyn, home to Bedknobs B&B, is a rambling Victorian Villa set in an acre of woodland garden, and offering guests 3 spacious double bedrooms. It is also home to Gill and Kim and their 2 cats, Mischief and Mouse.

We are happy to welcome guests with a variety of specific needs but please note that we cannot currently accommodate fully wheelchair bound visitors as our 3 bedrooms are all situated on the first floor.

Should you have any questions or queries whatsoever that are not answered in these pages, please don’t hesitate to contact us by your preferred means.

  • A picture gallery of each room, with their respective dimensions, all on the first floor, can be found under Our Rooms on Bedknobs website.
  • If you are without access to the Internet, we are happy to send a brochure showing pictures of all 3 rooms.
  • We will tell you prior to booking, that we are strictly non-smoking in the house, have cats and white Russian goose-down duvets - the latter we can easily change for synthetic, the cats we can’t!
  • We have carpets that are allergic to outdoor shoes so will ask if you wouldn’t mind bringing some indoor shoes/slippers with you, or we are happy to offer complimentary slippers.
  • You will find a map on the Directions Page on Bedknobs’ website and we can send out written directions should you wish when confirming bookings either by e-mail or snail mail. For SatNav users, our postcode is PL31 2DX
  • The Directions Page of Bedknobs’ website also provides details of other forms of public transport available for travelling to Cornwall along with some useful links to help you plan your journey.
  • Bodmin Parkway Railway Station is 3 miles out of town and we are happy to recommend Parnells Taxis - 01208 75000. Bodmin Parkway is on the Paddington to Penzance mainline route.
  • There is an hourly bus service from the Station (No.75) to the centre of town. Click here to access its current timetable
  • From Bedknobs, it’s a leisurely 8-10 minute walk to Bodmin town centre – and a little longer back up the hill that is about 150 yards (137m).
  • You can contact us by snail-mail, e-mail or telephone – all contact details at the end.
  • Off-street parking is available on our very slightly sloping driveway
  • The back door of the house is to be found in this parking area. It’s not the black door that you see on driving in but the white door tucked round in the porch opposite the barn.
  • Ring the bell on the back door and from there, we will escort you with your luggage that we’re happy to offer assistance with, round to the front door that is at the back of the house! This involves walking over a smooth concrete surface, a large slate slab under a wide arch then onto a path – it’s much easier than it sounds!
  • This path leads past the conservatory to the front door, and then into an encaustic tiled front porch (all level). This is where we ask you to slip into your indoor shoes or slippers and here there is seating and a dedicated shoe basket for each room. There is also a long-handled shoe-horn for your use if needed – and complimentary slippers should you not have your own. You’re very welcome to take said slippers home with you when you leave us.
  • Low energy outdoor lighting at night provides light from the car parking area to the front door.
  • From the front porch, step up one wide step and through a doorway, leading into the outer hall that is fully carpeted. The breakfast room leads off this hall.
  • Proceed through hall and standard-width Victorian doorway into inner hall (fully carpeted) from where a staircase leads to the 3 first floor bedrooms.
  • There is a small cloakroom opposite the bottom of the stairs (currently out of commission for redecoration)
  • You will find a bell on the table at the foot of the stairs and should you need us during the day/evening, just ring it and one of us is bound to appear, just like the genie in the lamp!
  • The staircase is 33 inches (84 cm) wide. There are 9 steps in the first flight, then a small split landing with a step in the middle followed by 6 more steps. There is a handrail from top to bottom.
  • In both ground floor and first floor halls, lamps with low energy bulbs stay on throughout the night for your safety and/or should you need to summon help during the night, you should use your own phone as our bedroom is at the other end of the house. Just let us know if you don’t have a mobile phone and we’ll arrange an intercom connection if you would like.
  • We will always offer to transport your luggage to your room – and back to your car when you leave us
  • Apart from the front porch and bathrooms, the remainder of that part of the house used by guests, is carpeted with short-pile 100% wool carpet that sits on Ecolay – an environmentally-friendly underlay made from natural products and subsequently bio-degradeable.
  • There is a hard-wired Fire Alarm System installed throughout the house and fire extinguishers are positioned appropriately.
  • Breakfast is taken communally around a large solid table that allows plenty of room to accommodate up to 8 guests comfortably. The matching chairs are also large with padded seats and high, carved, wooden backs. Being quite heavy, we are on hand at breakfast, if needed, to help push your chair in and out. The table has an underspace of 25.5 inches (65.5cm)
  • A radio generally plays quietly in the background during breakfast – and for this privilege, we are required to pay fees both to PRS (The Performing Rights Society) and PPL (Phonographic Performance Ltd)! Should you not share the enjoyment of background music, simply let us know.
  • The Breakfast Room plays a dual role as Guest Lounge and you are welcome to sit and browse.
  • In the inner hall, you will find a wealth of well-organised tourist information and leaflets, and OS maps that you are welcome to borrow for the day. We have up-to-date information on all areas of public and private transport in Cornwall including bus, trains, ferries and hire cars. We offer detailed information on walking, cycling and bike hire as well as the great choice of routes available for both. Bodmin is fast becoming the cycle hub of Cornwall.
  • The Breakfast Room/Guest Lounge does not have a television.
  • Wi-Fi internet access is available 24 hours a day throughout the house and is free of charge.
  • Apart from the front porch and bathrooms, the remainder of that part of the house used by guests, is carpeted with short-pile 100% wool carpet that sits on Ecolay – an environmentally-friendly underlay made from natural products and subsequently bio-degradeable.
  • The Breakfast Room/Guest Lounge on the ground floor, has a semi-stripped/ varnished wooden floor though the major part of the floor is covered with a wool carpet.
  • The first outdoor space you’ll encounter as you enter the gate, is the car parking area – see “Arrival & Parking Facilities” above.
  • Guests are welcome to relax in the garden and will find a table with sun umbrella and chairs round at the back of the house on the south-facing terrace with lawn that slopes off to a sprawling bank of rhododendrons beyond. The surrounding garden is mainly woodland with once hidden paths and walled areas. Note that Polgwyn is a ‘back to front’ house and that the car parking area where you enter is the old ‘service’ end whilst the front of the house is round at the back!
  • Our guests are very welcome to explore most corners of the garden that resemble, but on a miniature scale, The Lost Gardens of Heligan - prior to their restoration! These include the remains of a hothouse and greenhouse, hot beds, walled garden that is now home to our bees (and well away from the house!), secret paths and more besides. A plan of the garden, as well as its history and that of the house, is available for guests to read but obvious care needs to be taken when exploring.
  • Smoking is permitted outside the house – please ask us for an ashtray.
  • Bedknobs B&B has 3 guest rooms, Beeches, Laurel and Yew, each named after one of the trees that are seen from the bedroom window. All 3 bedrooms are on the first floor and each have the following facilities:

  • A silent room fridge containing Cornish milk complimentary, local bottled water, soft canned drinks as well as alcoholic refreshment including 330ml Cornish Harbour Brewing Company Pilsner and 25cl bottles of White and Rose wine. Payment for these optional extras is by way of an Honesty Box in each room.
  • Burts West Country crisps and red wine 25cl size, are available for sale too and displayed on the top shelf of the bookcase in the top hall.
  • Duvets are white Russian Goose down (sustainably sourced and involving no cruelty we’re assured by John Lewis). One feather and one synthetic pillow per person but both pillows and duvet can easily be substituted with anti-allergen bedding. Please tell us at the time of booking.
  • Extra bedding is available in each room.
  • Wireless internet access is available in all rooms at no additional charge.
  • Each bedroom has the following size flat-screen Panasonic TV: Beeches 37 inch, Laurel and Yew both 32 inch and all have a subtitle option.
  • All 3 bathrooms have standard height basins and WCs. All have a bath with power shower over. Beeches and Yew have shower curtains, Laurel has a tempered glass shower screen. All bathrooms have a grab rail to assist stepping in and out of the bath and a non-slip bath mat. Beeches has an authentic Airbath (spa bath). Beeches and Laurel both have a 7 inch step inside their bathrooms.
  • Pictures of all 3 bathrooms can be found at click Rooms and we’d be happy to provide exact dimensions of any facility on request.
  • We cater for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and coeliac diets and its helpful to know of any dietary requirements at the booking stage or at least prior to arrival.
  • Wi-Fi internet access is available 24 hours a day throughout the house and free of charge.
  • There is mobile phone reception (for most phones) throughout the house.
  • Each room has a comprehensive Room Book that offers information about your room and your stay at Bedknobs including facilities, Breakfast Menu and Sandwich Platter Menu, information on just where all the delicious Cornish produce comes from, maps and more besides.
  • On arrival we give you a Bodmin Town leaflet with a map of the town and also a SECTA (South East Cornwall Tourism Association) leaflet with a really useful map of the South East Cornwall area.
  • You will find our Restaurant Book in the Breakfast Room with a map showing local (within walking distance) eateries marked and sample menus for them. The Book also contains a List of Fine Dining Restaurants and details of other places to eat around Bodmin many of which have been discovered by earlier guests.
  • There are ‘In Case of Fire’ instructions at the front of the Room Information Books that we do ask all guests to read.
  • We welcome walkers and cyclists and offer safe storage for bicycles and drying facilities for damp clothes that have fallen victim to the Cornish mizzle.
  • We also welcome the owners of electric vehicles as our overnight EV charging points are most definitely under-used.
  • If away from home for some time, we will do your laundry (washed, dried and returned folded) for a reasonable charge.
  • Whilst we welcome accompanying guide dogs, we regret we cannot offer accommodation to other pets as our 2 resident cats Mischief and Mouse, would declare war!
  • We are happy to arrange flowers, chocolates and/or champagne if celebrating a special occasion.
  • Do ask if there is anything at all you would like arranged prior to your arrival and if we can, we shall.
